CHARACTER
Name: Satoko Houjou
Canon: Higurashi Naku Koro Ni
Gender: Female
Age: 11
Wing Color: Black.
Canon Point: post Matsuribayashi-hen
Canon Point Explanation: I will be taking her from the end of the arc where the answers are clear and all the game club members survived. Keiichi along with everyone else has proven a miracle could happen when everyone put their effort to make it happen. Satoko's life continues living with Rika. Even away from home, Satoko will still play the role of the younger sister for Keiichi. With new people to observe, she will still pull her pranks on certain people for amusement and attention. Simple enough, Satoko will still be energetic and some-what responsible for better interaction.
History: Satoko wiki | Higurashi Wiki
Personality:
When you first look at Satoko, she is very energetic and mischievous. In the Game Club, the main rule is to 'win by any means necessary'. She keeps a high spirit as she tries to pull any strings to have the game in her favor. Her main strategy is setting up traps, especially on her friend, Keiichi, and she is given the title 'trap master'. When Satoko becomes highly confident, she will turn bratty mainly after someone falls into her trap. She loves to pick on Keiichi mainly because he seems like a worthy rival. When she is told to do something she acts in a bratty and selfish manner, as Satoko is used to watching out for herself.
Satoko wasn't always energetic in the past; she depended on her brother to watch over her. The demand for attention escalated when both she and her brother were put to in the care of their aunt and uncle. After her brother disappeared, it felt as if the town was against her. One person turned to her and that was Rika. Now that there were two orphan girls living under the same roof, Satoko had to pull her own weight to help and support Rika. This is when Satoko's independence grew. Not only she would help out with the house, she would also watch over Rika just as Rika did the same. She even used her traps for security around the home to keep them both safe. She hated to feel hopeless. When she noticed Rika's behavior change during the Yakusamashi-hen [Disaster Awakening Chapter], Satoko questioned her. Rika pushed Satoko away, which made Satoko observe her from a distance. Satoko's suspicion grew, and she became worried by Rika's behavior and fear. Satoko could only watch from a distance and wonder what a small girl like her could do to help. Soon it was time to take matters into her own hands. Satoko would lie, lay traps, almost anything to watch over her friend. Rika's pain was Satoko's pain.
Satoko had never gotten along with her parents, especially with the men her mother would marry. Each man her mother would bring home wouldn't last long enough to be called a father. Satoko had even made false calls to the child abuse line to get rid of them, causing her mother to be furious. When the dam construction project came around, Satoko feared for her life at the hands of the townspeople even more.
With Hinamizawa syndrome, Satoko became stressed. Because of the life she lived with her parents and their jobs, her stress escalated enough for her to hallucinate her feared conclusions. She felt as if her life was in danger even by the hands of her own parents, driving her to push them off a cliff. Satoko didn’t recall what happened until much later in the story. She was broken easily by the realization, which is why she was monitored by her doctor and Rika.
When Satoko's uncle returned to town, she obediently returned to him. Even without her brother, Satoko wanted to prove she could withstand him just as she did in the past, as Satoko believed her brother left because of her selfishness. Satoko's uncle was the biggest obstacle for her, keeping her home and abusing her. Although she told herself she was doing this to prove her brother wrong, Satoko was afraid as well. Despite the abuse and demands, Satoko felt she had to protect the house. Her uncle even told her he would burn down her brother's room. The whole time, she was under her uncle's spell. She tried to get people to believe everything was okay. It was her battle alone. During the Minagoroshi-hen [Massacre Chapter], Rika's voice finally reached Satoko. Rika made Satoko realize that she was afraid of her uncle, and she had to stand up against him just as her brother did. After she faced her uncle, Satoko’s mind eased and she grew confident once more.
Satoko looks up to her “caretakers” more as siblings than parents, and so she thinks of Keiichi and Shion as her brother and sister figures respectively, helping them and them helping her in turn. When she was worried about Keiichi being alone, Satoko came over and made dinner for him. Shion would go out of her way to prepare lunch for Satoko, especially the foods she liked. What's interesting is, they don't raise their voice to her, and that's why they both have Satoko's trust. Satoko doesn't have any experiences of parental bonding because her relationship with her parents and uncle in the past. Instead she had her older brother with her and adapted to that. Satoko felt she could trust older kids who are close to friends with her and watch her as a small sister in a way. Plus, she also gets some attention like any little girl would like.
Strengths
Physical: For a child her size, Satoko can push a young teen or an adult with great strength. When she was about nine years old, it was believed that Satoko pushed her parents off the cliff because she felt threatened when she was influenced from the Hinamizawa syndrome and not the curse. During the Tatarigoroshi-hen arc, Satoko pushed Keiichi across the room as well. She did it again but this time off a bridge. When she feels her life is in danger, the Hinamizawa syndrome will take affect. When she lived with her uncle Teppei, she endured the physical abuse Teppei inflicted on her.
When she's not in the influence of the syndrome, Satoko is very good at carrying her own weight. She carries various props around to set up her traps. With Rika, she helps carry the groceries and anything else they need while living together. She also hits a homerun in the Tatarigoroshi-hen arc. It's believe she also inherits Satoshi, her brother's, strength.
Her strength alone comes from the traps she makes. In the Matsuribayashi-hen arc, Satoko's traps are proven when she takes down the Yamainu squad, the counter-intelligence forces. She can predict an enemies move and catch them in her web. When her traps are not-so deadly, she pranks people on a regular basis. In the Game Club it's her ace to win. The rules specifically say 'win at any cost' and Satoko plans to do that.
Mental: Satoko has always depended on her brother because he was the world to her. After the disappearance of Satoshi, Satoko decided it was time for her to be independent and hope one day to prove it when her brother returned.
Emotional: When her friends are in jeopardy, Satoko will do anything in her power to lend a hand.
Weaknesses
Physical: Even though Satoko's arms are strong, she's still a child and even a bullet can kill her. She can endure as much beating as possible but eventually she will fall because of her lack of rest. Even with little energy, she will try and push herself further.
Mental: Because Satoko never had luck with her parents in the past, she can't seek help from many adults. When it comes to traps, Satoko can be a brat and gloat in front of her target.
Emotional: Because of the Hinamizawa syndrome, Satoko can turn from sweet to deadly. When her life feels threatened, she will push them away. There were also times when she saw her friends dying, one by one, was when she lost hope.
Anything else?: Nothing at the moment.
SAMPLES
First Person:
My oh my, who left this little boy all by himself? For a place with free stuff, it lacks the responsibility. This placing is lacking potential, it makes Keiichi look mature. People of Luceti, have no fear for this place has brought someone more mature and responsible than twenty Keiichis in a bucket.
I'm Houjou Satoko from Hinamizawa for you all to remember. Although I may look young, I can cook like any young lady put together! Kei-san, how forturnate for you. You'll finally get a decent meal.
Before I forget, I hope you people are smart enough to use the front door when visiting someone. You can take back door too if it's easier for you.
Third Person:
Shopping was the best part of this new life. Who would of thought the world of Luceti was a goldmine? With free merchandises and food, she suppose this place was fine. When Satoko wasn't with Keiichi grocery shopping, she would browse the simple stores. She had to get some wash tubs, rope, thumb tacks, and more. When people saw her shop, they would think she shopped for miscellaneous items for the house. In truth, they were trapping materials. If anyone asked, she smiled and responded 'to help with the place' which was true in fact, if trap security and testing counted.
Satoko would go through every store and browsed. Anything that felt appetizing she would take it. It was important to keep an open mind on the possibilities, especially for different traps. Each trap she would make was like a work of art. Although it maybe art, it worked wondrous when activated. After Satoko felt satisfied, she would pack up and leave for the next store.
The hardware store was the best place. There were tools, wood, rope, and more her tiny fang could sink into. When she looked at the different light bulbs, her tiny fang couldn't hide. Sadly it probably wouldn't work outdoor but maybe with some hard floors, she could manage it somehow. She picked up a couple of those before she headed to the gardening section. Shovels were the best tools. Just the pure thought of it she could imagine the people of Luceti dropping down each concealed hole on the ground.
When her backpack was full, she grabbed another bag and dragged it with one hand as the other hand was occupied by the shovel which rested on her shoulder. Even if it was a chore to drag, Satoko didn't complain. Asking adults was a chore itself, and she could manage it on her own. The only thing that kept her going was the thought of traps in mind for later. Oh yes, Luceti was in for a surprise.
